Scottsburg EMS worker fights for life after rare reaction to common cold

SCOTTSBURG — A local first responder, Dillon Williams, 26, is in critical condition at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, battling a rare and severe reaction to what started as a common cold.

His wife, Brooke Williams, has been at his side, making life-or-death decisions as his condition rapidly deteriorated. In a matter of three days, she was told her husband would die.

Dillon, who serves his community as an employee of Scott County EMS and a volunteer firefighter with the Vienna Township Volunteer Fire Department, was otherwise healthy before the sudden illness.

According to Brooke, doctors suspect Dillon suffered a rare complication of the cold, which led to a dangerous buildup of fluid around his heart that required emergency removal. Dillon has always been healthy, and doctors said there was no reason someone so young, with no prior health issues, would get so sick so quickly.

Dillon’s commitment to service and his family is central to his life, with Brooke noting his devotion to his young daughter. His journey has been a medical challenge, with Norton Audubon marking his fourth hospital in several weeks.

Brooke expressed immense gratitude for the care he is now receiving. Within 24 hours of being at North Audubon, Dillon made “leaps and bounds, changing everything,” she said.

Looking ahead, Brooke is prepared to support Dillon through a long recovery, emphasizing that he has a life of service and fatherhood to return to. The family is grateful for the outpouring of support and community outreach they have received.
