Investigation into I-65 shooting leads to arrest

LAKE CO.- This past Monday, October 6th, detectives with the Indiana State Police District 13 Investigations Division were asked to investigate a shooting that occurred on I-65 near 61st Ave. At the time of the shooting, two subjects sustained gunshot wounds as a result of gunshots that were fired at them from another vehicle as they were both traveling southbound on I-65. After four days of detailed investigation, an arrest was made on Friday afternoon in Griffith. 

In the early morning hours on Friday, the Northwest Regional SWAT Team assisted ISP detectives in serving a search warrant at a residence in Griffith. The suspect was not at home at the time of the search. During the search, investigators seized a stolen firearm as well as drugs.

The suspect eventually returned to his residence and was taken into custody by Griffith Police. ISP detectives also returned to the scene and formally arrested him. The suspect has been identified as Nathaniel C. Malone, 23, from Griffith, IN. He is preliminarily being held at the jail on the following charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of marijuana.

Charges listed above are accusations of a crime. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges. All suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in court.
