ALA to host free webinar on protecting library patrons from scams

INDIANA—The American Library Association (ALA) is offering a free webinar next month to equip library staff with the knowledge and tools to help their communities combat rising consumer fraud.

The webinar, titled “‘They asked you for WHAT?!’ Helping Your Patrons Outsmart Scammers and Avoid Fraud,” will be held on Wednesday, October 22, at 1 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The program comes in the wake of alarming statistics from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which reported that Americans lost an astounding $5 billion to investment-related scams in 2024 alone. Given the high rate of fraud, the ALA acknowledges that these schemes are almost certainly impacting members of local library communities.

In this free, one-hour session, librarians will learn practical strategies to protect their patrons by:

  • Raising public awareness about common scams.
  • Educating people on effective fraud prevention techniques.
  • Building connections with trustworthy financial professionals.

The webinar will take place via Zoom. For Indiana library staff, the session is eligible for one Library Education Unit (LEU).
