Report of suspicious person at storage unit leads to meth arrest

BEDFORD — A late-night response to a suspicious person complaint at a local storage facility on Peerless Road resulted in the arrest of a Williams woman on drug charges after an EMS crew member alerted police to a concealed item.

Tracy Chenault, 55, of Williams, was arrested on October 2 and faces preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Officer Kaden Flynn, he responded to the storage units in the 1000 block of Peerless Road just after midnight. Upon arrival, he found Captain H. Fleetwood speaking with a male and a female, Tracy Chenault, sitting nearby. She was complaining of rib pain.

Chenault told officers she had been at the storage units since 8:30 a.m., attempting to retrieve her belongings because the owner wanted her to vacate the unit. She claimed that a male had taken her cell phone and hidden the locks.

EMS was called to the scene to assess Chenault’s rib pain. After being medically cleared, Chenault requested a ride to Mitchell, stating she did not want to be around the male.

As Officer Flynn began loading Chenault’s belongings into his patrol vehicle, an EMS crew member informed him that something had fallen out of Chenault’s bag, which she then attempted to conceal.

Sgt. Whitney Daugherty subsequently asked Chenault if she had anything illegal in her bags. After initially denying it, Chenault eventually admitted that a bag containing blankets held a pipe and methamphetamine, which she claimed she was holding for her son.

Sgt. Daugherty searched the specified bag and located a styrofoam cup containing a clear glass smoking device with white powdery residue and a small baggie containing three grams of crystal meth.

Chenault was transported to the Lawrence County Jail and booked without incident. Meanwhile, the property owner arrived and requested that the male with Chenault be officially trespassed from the premises.
