BNL settles into 17th place after first round of state finals at Prairie View

CARMEL – BNL settled into 17th place following the first round of the IHSAA state finals.

CARMEL – Bedford North Lawrence settled into 17th place following the first round of the IHSAA state championship during girls high school golf action on Friday at Prairie View.

The Stars posted a team score of 379. No.1 Zionsville carded 305 to claim the overnight lead in the 18-team field heading into the final round on Saturday. No.3 Noblesville (308) and No.2 Carmel (311) were lurking within striking range of the lead.

Sammie Nusbaum paced BNL with a 85 that included a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole. It’s the same hole where she recorded an ace during the practice round on Thursday. She also suffered four double bogeys while battling a balky putter.

”Sammie actually played pretty well,” BNL coach Carly Stigall said. “Her putter was just cold as ice. She had several three-putts and just couldn’t quite find a groove with the putter.”

Big numbers, as typical with the tough layout, were a problem on the scorecards. Emma Voris got off to a solid start with three opening pars before finishing at 96 (with a 9 on the par-3 15th hole). Kinleigh Root, the lone senior on the squad, fired a 94 with six doubles or worse, and Kadynn Canada completed the team scoring with 104.

”It was a very long and hot day, and I think we lost a little bit of focus halfway through,” Stigall said of the six-hour rounds. “But I’m proud of the girls for sticking it out, and I know tomorrow will be a better day.”

Carmel freshman Maya Keuling earned the individual lead with a sensational 4-under 68 that featured four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 third hole.
