WHITELAND – Whiteland’s Madison Fleury scored the first three goals while powering the Warriors to a 9-0 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during girls high school soccer action on Saturday.
Fleury recorded her hat trick during the first 11 minutes as Whiteland improved to 10-4-1.
“It was our first time playing them, and we were not sure what to expect,” BNL coach Bret Roberts said. “I figured they would be a good team, but they shouldn’t have beat us by as much as they did. My girls had some great offensive opportunities but couldn’t get a shot in, and we had a tough time defending them.”
Kinley Waalkins (23:59), Mackenzie Fleury (10:45) and Rhianna Hardy (5:32) added goals as Whiteland cruised to a 6-0 lead at the half. The Warriors capped the mercy-rule victory with second-half goals from Ashley Cooprider (36:27), Mackenzie Fleury (34:48) and Kaelynn Crawford (20:13).
“They had several girls on their attack that had very technical footwork, and I could tell that shooting was one of their strong suits,” Roberts said. “They placed the ball very well and hardly ever kicked it to our goalie’s hands. We could have done a better job of winning 50-50 balls and being first to the ball. Summer (Hughes) and Mycah (Munguia) had some great passes on offense, but we were never able to actually get it right in front of their goal to shoot and test their goalie.”
BNL (3-8-2) will learn its postseason fate when the IHSAA announces the sectional draws on Sunday. The Stars will host Edgewood on Monday.
