Oolitic man charged with vehicle theft after refusing to return mother’s car

OOLITIC – An Oolitic man is facing charges of motor vehicle theft after allegedly taking his mother’s car without permission and refusing to return it.

An affidavit of probable cause filed by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department identifies the suspect as Edric Cash, 24, of Oolitic.

The incident was reported on September 17, 2025, by the female vehicle owner, who told police that her son, Cash, took her 2020 silver Ford Fusion five days earlier. According to the police affidavit, Marian had explicitly told Edric on September 10 that he no longer had permission to use the car.

The affidavit states that the vehicle owner made several attempts to retrieve the vehicle, but her son refused to return it. She provided the police with screenshots of a text message exchange in which Edric claimed he was “making better use of the car” to help people and therefore felt no obligation to return it.

The vehicle owner’s grandson corroborated his grandmother’s story, telling police he witnessed the initial confrontation. He stated that his grandmother had been on her knees begging for the keys, which Edric refused to give back.

The vehicle owner was able to track the vehicle using a Ford-provided app, which showed its location in the 2000 block of East 3rd Street in Bloomington, Indiana, at the time the report was filed. She has signed a “Department Verification of Stolen Motor Vehicle” form, and a warrant was requested for Edric Cash’s arrest. He was detained on September 18 on charges of motor vehicle theft and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.
