ISP investigates apparent murder-suicide in Sullivan County

SULLIVAN CO. – Indiana State Police (ISP) detectives are investigating a shooting that left two people dead in rural Sullivan County. The incident, which occurred on Monday, September 22, 2025, is believed to be a murder-suicide.

Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt requested the assistance of ISP detectives from the Putnamville Post after his deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting near Shelburn at approximately 4:00 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies found no one was at the residence. After entering the home, they discovered a deceased female and a deceased male with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The two individuals have been identified as Keith Sheffler, 81, and Judy Sheffler, 75, both of Shelburn. Family members have been notified.

The investigation is ongoing, with detectives from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post leading the case, assisted by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office. No additional details have been released at this time.
