PENDLETON – Indiana State Police Superintendent Anthony Scott has announced the promotion of Trooper J.T. Burns to the rank of Sergeant, where he will serve as a squad supervisor for the Pendleton District. Sergeant Burns competed in a promotion process, which included a written test, an oral interview, and an overall evaluation of work performance.Â

Sergeant Burns is a native of New Castle and graduated from New Castle High School in 2007. During his senior year of high school, Burns began EMT school. After high school, He continued his education by attending the Methodist Hospital Paramedic Program in 2010. Before joining the Indiana State Police, Burns worked as a paramedic for New Castle EMS and served as a Reserve Deputy for the Henry County Sheriff’s Department.
In 2016, Sergeant Burns graduated from the 76th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy and was assigned to the Pendleton District. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to serving the communities in his home region, primarily patrolling Henry and Wayne County.Â
In 2017, Sgt Burns received a Lifesaving Award for his swift action in applying a second tourniquet to an individual who had severed an arm in an accident. The following year, he was honored as the 2018 Pendleton District Trooper of the Year for his exemplary service, professionalism, and commitment to the citizens of Indiana.
Sergeant Burns holds several specialized roles within the department. He is a Tactical Medicine (TacMed) Instructor, a Fatal Crash Reconstructionist, a Field Training Officer (FTO), and an Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) Instructor
In his new role, Sergeant Burns will supervise and mentor a squad of troopers assigned to the Pendleton District.Â
