Update on officer-involved shooting in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE – An ongoing investigation is underway following a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on Friday, September 12, 2025, in northeast Allen County. The individual who was shot has been identified as 81-year-old William Joseph Peters.

The incident began shortly after 8:00 p.m. when an Allen County Sheriff’s Deputy on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle at the dead end of Irving Road. As the deputy approached, they observed an armed person inside the vehicle with an unknown injury. Due to the unusual circumstances and the presence of a weapon, the deputy called for backup.

Officers from the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the Fort Wayne Police Department, and the Indiana State Police Department responded to the scene. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and communicate with the individual. However, after some time, the person exited the car and raised the weapon toward the police. In response, officers from all three agencies fired at the individual.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has since identified the deceased individual as William Joseph Peters, a white male. Authorities have noted that an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound was present when the first deputy approached the vehicle.

One Fort Wayne Police Officer sustained a minor injury during the incident and was released from the hospital shortly after. The exact cause of the officer’s injury is still unclear.

The Indiana State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting a full investigation into the shooting. No further information is available at this time.
