Seymour officials urge proper disposal of needles after hazardous finds in recycling

SEYMOUR — City workers in Seymour are warning residents to properly dispose of medical waste after several needles and related items were recently discovered in recycling materials.

The Department of Public Works said sharps were found mixed in with recyclables, creating a hazard for employees who handle the materials.

Health officials emphasized that syringes, needles, and their plastic components — including caps, cases, guards, holders, and shields — should not be placed in recycling bins. Those items are not considered recyclable containers, such as bottles, jugs, tubs, or cups.

The Jackson County Health Department provides free sharps containers for safe disposal. Residents can obtain and return the containers at no cost.

City officials urged the public to use the designated containers and to help protect workers by keeping medical waste out of the recycling stream.
