INDIANA — Indiana Governor Mike Braun has directed that flags across the state be flown at half-staff on Thursday, September 11, in observance of Patriot Day. The directive applies to all state facilities and is in remembrance of the attacks on September 11, 2001.
According to a news release from the governor’s office, the flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijackers crashed airplanes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. The tribute also celebrates the first responders who “acted with courage to save countless lives.”
In the release, Governor Braun extended his condolences to the families who lost loved ones, calling the attacks an “unspeakable tragedy.” He encouraged all Hoosiers to not only remember the lives lost and the heroes who responded, but also the sense of community that carried the nation through that dark time.
“What carried us through that dark time was not just our faith in our nation, but our faith in each other,” Braun said in the release. He also encouraged Indiana businesses and residents to lower their flags to honor and “show respect” for the victims and heroes of that day.
