Bedford’s TASC bus service delivers 27,000 rides in 2024, providing vital support for residents without transportation

BEDFORD — Bedford’s Transit Authority of Stone City (TASC) continues to serve residents with weekday, demand-response bus service designed to provide accessible transportation across the community.

“In a community like Bedford, where neighbors still greet each other by name, and local values still hold strong, the TASC bus service provides curb-to-curb transportation within the Bedford city limits,” Mayor Sam Craig said.

The system operates Monday through Friday, from early morning through evening hours, offering curb-to-curb service by reservation. Riders schedule trips in advance by calling 812-275-1633, and buses run on a shared-ride, first-come, first-served basis.

All TASC vehicles are equipped with mobility lifts and trained drivers to assist passengers to and from the curb. The service accommodates wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids. Policies include a five-minute pickup window and guidelines on no-shows to help keep schedules on track.

Craig said the program continues to meet the needs of a wide range of residents. “Last year, we transported over 27,000 passengers over 72,000 miles. This service is especially crucial to senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and residents without access to a personal vehicle,” he said.

TASC is open to anyone in the community and is free to ride. The service is partially supported by federal, state, and local funding, helping ensure access for those who need transportation to work, medical appointments, or other daily activities.

For Bedford residents without private transportation, TASC remains a vital option, ensuring affordable, accessible connections to work, services, and community life.
