BEDFORD — A Bedford woman was arrested Friday after she allegedly burglarized a residence and stole ten puppies and other items.
Melissa H. Carter, 41, has been charged with burglary and theft.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Bedford Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence on Ted Jones Drive after the homeowners reported that ten eight-week-old Pitbull/Lab mix puppies, a guitar, and a tablet were stolen from their home. The homeowners reported to police that they had left their front door unlocked and found no signs of forced entry.
Police were later contacted by the homeowners and a family member, who said they had gone to the Shawnee Apartments and had their puppies and property returned by Melissa Carter.
When police made contact with Carter, she initially denied entering the residence but later admitted to taking the puppies. She claimed that she thought the apartment was abandoned and that the property had been left behind. She said she returned later to take the puppies after she couldn’t stop thinking about them, and also took the other items at that time.
Carter was transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
