BEDFORD — A Shelbyville man was arrested on Friday, September 5, after allegedly resisting arrest and fleeing from police while intoxicated. Dustin Dakota Goodwin, 27, faces charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest by force, and resisting arrest by fleeing.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Bedford Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of 22nd and I Streets regarding an intoxicated man who had left a Transitions facility and was lying in a yard. The man, later identified as Goodwin, was described as being violent.
Captain Dakoda Emmons of the Bedford Police Department arrived on the scene and found Goodwin lying in a yard, appearing lifeless. When approached, Goodwin reportedly got up, stumbled, and fled from the officer. After a brief foot chase, officers located Goodwin again, but he continued to resist and refused to comply with commands.
During the arrest, Goodwin allegedly locked his hands together to prevent officers from handcuffing him. An officer then used a taser in a drive stun, which caused Goodwin to comply and allowed officers to place him in handcuffs.
After being taken into custody, Goodwin continued to resist while being escorted to the patrol car and later at the Lawrence County Jail. According to a Transitions employee, Goodwin had returned to the facility intoxicated and was attempting to fight with other residents before he left and was seen possibly purchasing something from a vehicle.
Goodwin was transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
