BEDFORD — A Williams man was arrested early Sunday morning after he was found unconscious behind the wheel of his car at an intersection in Bedford. Troy Miller, 58, was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 percent or greater.

According to a probable cause affidavit from the Bedford Police Department, officers were dispatched to the intersection of 5th Street and State Road 37 after a complaint about a male slumped over his steering wheel. Upon arrival, an officer found a gray Hyundai Sonata stopped at the light with the engine running and the car in drive. The driver, identified as Troy Miller, was unconscious.
After repeatedly banging on the window, the officer was able to wake Miller, who was then ordered to put the vehicle in park. Instead, Miller reportedly began to drive forward. Officers again ordered him to stop and put the car in park, which he eventually did.
The officer noted that Miller was slurring his speech and had the odor of alcohol on his breath. Miller reportedly admitted to having “quite a bit” to drink. When asked to exit the vehicle, Miller struggled to get out and appeared unsteady on his feet. During a field sobriety test, he stated, “Hell, I ain’t going to pass the sobriety tests.” The test was terminated for his safety.
A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.174, and a subsequent chemical test at the police station yielded a result of 0.186, which is more than twice the legal limit.
Miller was transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
