Richard ‘Rich’ Murdy, 80, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born April 13, 1945, in Moline, IL, he was the son of Robert and Patricia (Draper) Murdy. He first married Barbara Watson on December 22, 1971, and she passed away on April 11, 2008. He then married Suree Murdy on March 17, 2010, and she survives.
After growing up in Illinois, Rich had a full life. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Iowa State and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was a US Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War, where he served with the Air Cavalry-Air Mobile Unit, also known as the “Air Cav unit.” As an Electrical Engineer, Rich worked on the Trident Submarine and the Tomahawk Cruise Missile system at NWSC Crane, and was also a certified locksmith. He had attended Avoca Baptist Church.
Rich is survived by his wife, Suree Murdy; one son, Jacob Murdy; one stepdaughter, Kanchan (Joey) Santiago; two grandchildren, Melvin and Liliana; two sisters, Ruth Sanders and Dorothy Spriet.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Watson, in 2008, and his parents, Robert and Patricia Murdy.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne Family Funeral Homes, 818 18th Street in Bedford, IN. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford, with Military Honors being presented by the Honor Guard of the American Legion, Gillen Post 33. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel.
