INDIANA — Monday, September 8, is the second annual National 988 Day, serving as a reminder of the support available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. 988 Indiana provides a direct connection to compassionate care for anyone experiencing mental health distress, including thoughts of suicide, substance use crises, or other emotional distress.

The service is more than just a simple phone number. Individuals who connect with 988 Indiana are linked with a trained crisis specialist who is prepared to help. In some cases, face-to-face assistance may be provided by a small team of mental health specialists, which often includes a crisis counselor and a person with lived experience with a mental health crisis.
The program also offers a higher level of assistance when needed. With mutual agreement, individuals can be transported to a local safe place of short-term aid, with the goal of stabilization before returning to their community.
If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide, a mental health crisis, or substance use issues, you can call, text, or chat 988 to speak with a trained crisis specialist 24/7. A complete list of community resources is available by visiting 988indiana.org/community-resources.
