WASHINGTON— Daviess County Chief Deputy Steve Sturgis officially announced his candidacy for Daviess County Sheriff Saturday afternoon during a special conference on the steps of the Daviess County Courthouse.

Sturgis, who has served as chief deputy under current Sheriff Gary Allison, will be the first to file for the office formally. Sheriff Allison is not seeking re-election due to term limits.
Public safety is at the core of Sturgis’s campaign, which he says is essential for fostering community growth. Sturgis is in his 23rd year of law enforcement and is a graduate of Vincennes University with an Associate of Science degree, the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, and the Leadership Program of Daviess County.
He is a lifelong resident of Daviess County and enjoys defensive tactics, firearms training, and reading self-help books. He also values working with other community-minded individuals who have a genuine interest in making their communities a better place.
