Surging Stars sweep past Brown County

BNL’s Wyatt Corbin posted a win at No.3 singles as the Stars swept Brown County on Thursday.

NASHVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence recorded its third straight victory with a 5-0 sweep of Brown County during boys high school tennis action on Thursday.

The Stars (5-2) dominated doubles and dropped only one set on the five courts.

Jackson Corey led the singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jax Burt at No.1. Asher Thompson swept past Bryan Teague 6-0, 6-0 at No.2, and Wyatt Corbin returned to the lineup with a 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 triumph at No.3.

“It was a good feeling to sweep every court in a great fashion,” said BNL coach Ian Dillman, who recorded his first 5-0 win as head coach. “Wyatt has been out on injury for the past few matches due to a lower back issue. This was a good test for him to see his strength on the court, to see what he needs to work on to get back in the swing of things. He’s a fighter, that’s what we need.

“Jackson was solid. His game has really grown this season. He’s not hitting slow lob balls to his opponents anymore. He’s hitting through the ball and he’s creating plays that allow him to come up to the net and finish off the point. Last year’s Jackson would lose 6-0 6-0 to this year’s Jackson.”

In doubles, Neal Patel and Braxton Fugate cruised past Jack Keener and Nolan McFall 6-1, 6-1 at No.1. Laedon Jones and Micah Carter, a new pairing, rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tyler Webb and Jax Anderson at No.2.

“Laedon made his debut,” Dillman said. “He played some there last year, so those matches really helped him out. His serve has really improved recently, hitting harder and with more variety. Micah is a great influence on wailing on the ball, so those two together really clicked.”

The Stars will visit Bloomington South on Tuesday.
