INDIANA — Squirrel hunting season is officially open in Indiana, offering an accessible and rewarding opportunity for both new and experienced hunters to enjoy the outdoors. The season, which began on August 15, runs until January 31, 2026.

Hunting squirrels is considered an excellent entry-level activity because it requires minimal specialized equipment. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), all a hunter needs is patience, a comfortable log to sit on, and a reliable shotgun or .22 centerfire rifle. The low-pressure nature of the hunt makes it an ideal way for beginners to get acquainted with hunting.
Before heading out, all hunters must have a valid hunting license or a hunt/fish combo license.
Know Your Squirrels: Species and Regulations
Indiana is home to four species of tree squirrels, each with different regulations:
- Fox and Gray Squirrels: These are regulated species. The hunting season for these animals is from August 15, 2025, to January 31, 2026. The daily bag limit is five, and the possession limit is 10. A key regulation to remember is that shooting into dreys (squirrel nests made of leaves) is illegal.
- American Red Squirrels: These squirrels can be hunted year-round with no bag limit. Like with other species, shooting into dreys is illegal.
- Southern Flying Squirrels: This species is protected and cannot be hunted.
Important Safety Note
From November 1 to January 31, all hunters are required to wear hunter orange, a critical safety measure that ensures visibility in the woods.
Squirrel hunting offers a simple, affordable, and enjoyable way to engage with Indiana’s natural environment.
