Complaints from motorists lead to Arrest at Bedford gas station

BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Monday, August 25, after a 911 caller reported that she had been driving into oncoming traffic and forcing other vehicles off the road. Alice Haymaker, 62, faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Sarah Haluda, she was dispatched to Revere’s Food & Fuel at approximately 2:10 p.m. on August 25 after receiving a report of an impaired driver. The caller stated that the driver of a gray or silver Camaro had crossed the center line, forcing several vehicles off the road, before turning into the gas station.

Officer Haluda located Haymaker inside the store and asked her to step outside. Haymaker denied driving in oncoming traffic but admitted to possibly weaving, blaming the curves in the road and her inability to see over the steering wheel. She also denied using any drugs or alcohol, but was hesitant when asked about prescription medications.

Haymaker agreed to perform a series of sobriety tests. She struggled with the tests, at one point stating she was going to fall and was unable to maintain her balance. During the tests, Haymaker admitted she was taking Hydrocodone, a prescription painkiller, but claimed she had only taken it the previous evening. When the officer expressed her belief that Haymaker was too impaired to drive, Haymaker insisted she was “fine” and that her driving “wasn’t that bad.”

An oral fluid test revealed positive results for cannabis and opiates. Haymaker then admitted to using Gabapentin, Xanax, marijuana, a muscle relaxer, and a sleeping medication recently. An INSPECT report confirmed she had prescriptions for Xanax, Gabapentin, and Hydrocodone.

Haymaker was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital, where a blood draw was taken for testing. She was then transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing.
