BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Commissioners have approved a contract with American Financial Credit Services (AFCS), a new collection agency tasked with collecting unpaid personal property taxes. The decision was made during a commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday morning.

Lawrence County Treasurer Penny Cobb said the new service will only collect delinquent property taxes. Once an account is sent to AFCS, all payments must be made directly through their office.
Cobb noted that this service will come at no cost to the county. Instead, AFCS will collect its fees by charging interest to taxpayers who are behind on their payments.
AFCS is currently working with 82 of Indiana’s 92 counties. Cobb is hopeful that the new agency will be more effective than the previous company and help collect past-due taxes more efficiently.
