CHARLESTOWN – A Clark County man was arrested Sunday afternoon after being stopped for driving 117 mph on State Road 62.
On Sunday afternoon, Trooper Rob Caudill was stopped at a pull-off on the south side of State Road 62 just east of Charlestown and monitoring traffic. Around 3:45 pm, Trooper Caudill heard a vehicle accelerating as it approached his location. As the car came into view, he observed it to be a white Chevrolet Corvette and clocked the car with his in-car RADAR travelling eastbound at 117 mph in the 55 mph zone: 62 mph over the maximum speed limit. The driver then quickly slowed as he passed Trooper Caudill’s location, and Trooper Caudill performed a traffic stop just west of Decker Lane.
Trooper Caudill asked the driver, identified as 40-year-old Derick E. Hihn of Charlestown, Indiana, to step from the vehicle and placed him under arrest for reckless driving. While speaking with Hihn, Trooper Caudill observed indications of possible alcohol impairment and conducted an OWI investigation. As a result of the traffic stop and ensuing investigation, Derick Hihn was arrested for reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor, operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI), a Class C misdemeanor, and OWI with endangerment, a Class A misdemeanor. Â Â
Hihn was incarcerated at the Clark County Jail, and his vehicle was towed from the scene of the traffic stop.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
