SELLERSBURG – Silver Creek scored a late goal to edge Bedford North Lawrence 2-1 during the girls high school soccer season opener on Saturday.
The Dragons recorded the game winner by Lainey Feldman with 6:05 left. She won a chaotic scramble in front of the net after a previous shot, off a corner kick, was blocked and fallen on by a Silver Creek player.
After a scoreless first half, Silver Creek got on the board first with 21:09 left on a goal by Cammy Sears. The Stars got the equalizer when Summer Hughes cracked a left-footed shot home with 9:06 remaining.
“I was impressed with how we played, especially because Silver Creek is a tough team,” BNL coach Bret Roberts said. “We have never scored on them, and the score has never been as close as it was today. I am also excited that we scored on such a strong defense because that shows that we should be able to score on any team we play this season.
”I was worried going into the season about my defense, because we basically have a whole new back line due to injuries and graduates. But the girls I had back there were able to hold them off, expect for the two goals that snuck in. Rachael Barr and Zee Miskuf were standouts on defense.”
BNL will make its home debut on the new turf field against Bloomington North on Monday.
