BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington residents should prepare for a significant increase in traffic as Indiana University students begin their return to the city for the fall semester. The Indiana State Police is urging drivers to exercise caution and patience on local roadways as students, many of whom are new to the area, settle in.

The fall semester officially begins on Monday, August 25, 2025, with move-in dates and orientation activities starting in the preceding weeks. This influx of students, along with their families and new vehicles, is expected to cause congestion, particularly on major routes leading into the city and around the university campus.
ISP wants everyone to stay safe during this busy time and be mindful of more pedestrians and unfamiliar drivers. It’s essential to take your time, pay attention to traffic laws, and be aware of your surroundings.

The ISP reminds both residents and students to drive defensively, be alert for pedestrians crossing streets, and allow for extra travel time. The increased enforcement is part of a broader effort to ensure a safe start to the academic year for the entire community.
Travelers should also check the Indiana Department of Transportation TrafficWise website before heading to Bloomington for any potential delays or detours due to construction or traffic. IU Police Department officers will be stationed at several intersections around campus, and signs will help guide traffic. Pets, except therapy and guide dogs, are not allowed in residence halls.
Welcome Week activities will help students find their way around, make new friends, and acclimate to campus. Highlights include:
- New Student Induction Ceremony: 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The event will also be livestreamed for family members unable to be on campus.
- Traditions and Spirit of IU: 8 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Memorial Stadium. All first-year students should plan to attend the annual class photo that will be taken on the field.
Other favorites like CultureFest, RecFest, all academic events, open houses, Herman B House Party, and many more can be found in the IU Bloomington Events Calendar with the Welcome Week tag.
