According to the Vincennes Police Department, officers were called to the Cardinal Liquor Store at 2101 N. Sixth Street just before 1:00 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Hendershot with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. She was later pronounced dead by the coroner’s office.

The suspect, 32-year-old Dylan Allen Smith, reportedly fled the scene in a black SUV. A wrecked black Cadillac Escalade was found by police a block away, which led them to a nearby home on Carbon Street. After a tenant was able to exit the residence and confirmed that Smith was inside and armed with a knife, a standoff began.

Police were able to take Smith into custody after several hours, reportedly using “less lethal devices” to assist in his apprehension. He has been charged with murder and is being held in the Knox County Jail. An autopsy for Hendershot has been scheduled, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Vincennes Police Department was assisted by the Indiana State Police, Princeton Police, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Vincennes University Police, and the Knox County Prosecutor’s Office.
