Obituary: Charles Edwin ‘Eddie’ Maick

September 11, 1937 – July 26, 2025

Charles Edwin ‘Eddie’ Maick, 87, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his home.

Born September 11, 1937, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Frederick ‘Dutch’ and Minnie Mae (Craig) Maick. Eddie was a graduate of Bedford High School in the class of 1955. He played cornet in the high school band for four years and received his band letter.

After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During his four-year enlistment, he was stationed in different locations. Two that held special memories were Goose Bay, Labrador, and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. While in Puerto Rico, he was stationed at Ramey Air Force Base 72nd Division, which was part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He loved to recall working on the B-36 and then the B-52 airplanes. In 1958, he was awarded a certificate for Outstanding Achievement for meritorious service during Operation Curtain Raiser. Besides being proud of his family, he was very proud of the accomplishment.

After serving in the Air Force, he returned to Bedford and began work at Indiana Petroleum. He later worked at Kaiser Aluminum and finished his career at Visteon, retiring in 2000.

Eddie married the love of his life, Judith Ann “Judy” Miller, and they spent 45 wonderful years together. Eddie and Judy retired the same day and spent the better part of nine years traveling, gardening, and taking care of the home they built (literally) together. Judy preceded him in death on April 4, 2009. Judy and his girls never felt more loved and cared for by anyone than Eddie.

Survivors include three daughters, Kelly Maick, Melody (Brent) Allen, and Mary Maick-Horton; three grandsons, Kyle (Tiffany) Dalton, Evan Allen, and Brody Horton; two great-grandsons, Grant and Grady Dalton; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his closest friend, Jeff Vance.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, siblings, and their spouses, his in-laws, Morris “Buster” and Dorothy Miller, a brother-in-law, Mike Miller, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the hour of service on Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in memory of Eddie be made to The Maick Family Scholarship through the BNL Scholarship Foundation.
