Indiana State Police intensify “Move Over” enforcement campaign

INDIANA – The Indiana State Police (ISP) are stepping up efforts to enforce the state’s “Move Over Law,” targeting drivers who fail to yield to emergency and other authorized vehicles stopped on the shoulder. This heightened awareness campaign is being conducted in conjunction with the “Six State Trooper Project.”

Indiana law mandates that drivers, when encountering a vehicle on the shoulder with activated yellow hazard lights, must either move completely over into the left lane if it is safe to do so, or slow down to 10 mph below the posted speed limit. This crucial safety regulation applies not only to private vehicles with hazards but also to emergency vehicles, state highway vehicles, and tow trucks displaying flashing lights.

The “Move Over” campaign aims to enhance safety for law enforcement officers, emergency personnel, roadside assistance providers, and motorists who are stranded.

Failure to comply with the law puts these individuals at significant risk.
