Heat advisory issued for Southern Indiana; Local cooling center open

BEDFORD – A Heat Advisory remains in effect from Noon EDT (11 AM CDT) today, Thursday, July 24th, until 8 p.m. EDT (7 PM CDT) this evening, for portions of south-central Indiana and various regions of central Kentucky.

Heat index values are expected to reach up to 107 degrees.

The National Weather Service warns that hot temperatures and high humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents are strongly advised to take precautions: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid direct sunlight, and check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and those without adequate cooling.

In response to the dangerous heat, the Men’s Warming Shelter in Bedford has extended its hours and will serve as a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sunday, July 27th.

During these hours, the cooling center will provide a range of vital services to those seeking refuge from the heat, including:

  • Meals
  • Showers
  • Laundry facilities
  • A computer center
  • A lounge area
  • A food pantry
  • Supplies
  • Support services

Additionally, the shelter will offer frozen bottled water in a cooler located on the northwest corner of the building. A canopied area with picnic tables and chairs is also available in the back for individuals seeking shade.

The cooling center welcomes everyone, including men, women, children, families, and the elderly. Well-behaved pets are also welcome, provided they remain with their owners.

The Men’s Warming Shelter encourages community members to suggest and promote neighbors in need to utilize these services during the heat advisory.
