President Trump approves Major Disaster Declaration for Indiana following severe storms

WASHINGTON D.C. / INDIANA – President Donald Trump has approved a major disaster declaration for the state of Indiana, unlocking significant federal assistance to aid in recovery efforts following severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and widespread flooding that impacted the state from March 30 through April 9, 2025.

President Donald Trump

An announcement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Wednesday confirmed that federal disaster assistance will supplement state and local recovery initiatives. Public Assistance federal funding is now available on a cost-sharing basis for state, tribal, and eligible local governments, as well as specific private nonprofit organizations. This funding is designated for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by severe weather events.

Counties initially included in the declaration are: Bartholomew, Brown, Clark, Crawford, Decatur, Floyd, Franklin, Greene, Harrison, Jefferson, Lawrence, Madison, Marshall, Martin, Montgomery, Morgan, Orange, Owen, Perry, Switzerland, Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Washington.

Governor Mike Braun

Indiana Governor Mike Braun expressed gratitude for the President’s swift approval. “I want to thank President Trump for approving Indiana’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration following the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that affected parts of Indiana from March 30 to April 9,” Governor Braun stated. He further noted that the declaration “unlocks more than $15 million in funds to support all 23 counties.”

Governor Braun emphasized the impact of these funds, adding, “These funds will help rebuild roads, bridges, and public facilities, and support the emergency services that responded when Hoosiers needed them most.”

FEMA indicated that additional designations for federal assistance may be made at a later date, should they be requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments. This declaration provides critical resources as Indiana communities continue to recover from the widespread impact of the spring severe weather.
