BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on Sunday, July 20, 2025, following a reported battery incident. Albert A. Hughes, 52, of Bedford, was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of battery.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Sgt. Toby Gerkin of the Bedford Police Department officers were dispatched to Industrial Park Drive in reference to a battery. Upon arrival, Sgt. Gerkin spoke with a woman, who stated that Albert Hughes had approached her and asked for a cigarette. She told police she then “went on a rant” about Hughes needing to buy his own cigarettes.
She alleged that at that point, Hughes approached her, slapped her on the right side of her face, causing her pain, and then grabbed her by both arms before they separated. A man, who was reportedly present during the entire altercation, confirmed the woman’s account. The woman advised officers she wished to file charges against Hughes and signed a battery affidavit.
Officers located Hughes inside the building and detained him. After being read his Miranda Rights, Hughes reportedly stated he didn’t “really remember what had happened” but acknowledged he and the woman “had gotten into it.”
Although no visible injuries were observed on the woman, photographs were taken and placed in the incident folder. Hughes was transported to the Lawrence County Jail and remanded into custody. The affidavit also notes that Hughes is currently out on bond for other pending criminal charges.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the Probable Cause Affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
