Terry Dewayne Smith, 55, of Elizabethtown, Indiana, passed away on July 11, 2025.
He was born in Seymour on March 19, 1970, to the late Otha “Duke” Smith and Frances L. (Deaton) Smith.
Terry was a man who valued family and worked hard to take care of those around him. Some of his favorite shows were The Simpsons, Family Guy, and Married with Children. He loved ’70s and ’80s music, especially Led Zeppelin. He enjoyed being near the salt water of the ocean and always had a smiley face and a conversation ready to go. He was enthusiastic about anything that would prompt you to talk, think, and gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in. A fearless yet fearful man.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his life partner, Sherry Lynn Hartwell; brothers, Larry (Pam) Smith, Rick (Lesley) Smith, and Kevin (Stephanie Messer) Smith; several nieces and nephews; stepchildren, Tanya Hartwell, Heather Hartwell, and Brittany Hartwell; grandchildren, Devon Foster, Braydon Hartwell, Taylor Hartwell, Layton Williams, Kylie Hartwell, Wyley Gilley, Owen Gilley, Zayden Slachter, Kali Savage; and great-grandchildren, Rory Foster and Mason Vogel.
Services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Burkholder Chapel of Thorne Family Funeral Homes, 419 North Chestnut Street, Seymour, Indiana 47274. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and again on Friday from noon until the time of service at Burkholder Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made in Terry’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
