The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) push for online disability and SSI applications is encountering obstacles in southern Indiana, where digital access and technology skills remain limited.
Despite the convenience of the new system, application rates remain low in rural areas. In some counties, fewer than one in five applicants are choosing the online option. Residents cite concerns about internet access, limited technical experience, and lack of confidence in completing sensitive tasks digitally.
Applicants without access to reliable broadband often travel to distant SSA offices, incurring additional costs and time. Community centers and nonprofit agencies are stepping in to help residents navigate the online tools, but the need remains high.
SSA officials have indicated they plan to expand outreach and install mobile support kiosks. However, until digital infrastructure improves, many rural Hoosiers may continue relying on traditional in-person or paper-based methods.
