MITCHELL – A woman from Ellettsville was arrested late Friday night in Mitchell on multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine, following a traffic stop.
Dusty Sue Cain, 44, faces charges of driving with a suspended driver’s license with a prior conviction, a Class A misdemeanor, possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor, and possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Kyle Long, he observed a black Ford F-150 fail to use a turn signal twice while entering and executing a turn from State Road 37 onto State Road 60 West on Friday, June 27, 2025, at approximately 11:28 p.m. Deputy Long also noted the vehicle crossing the centerline multiple times before he initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of SR 60 West and Fleenor Road.
Upon approaching the vehicle, Deputy Long stated that the driver, later identified as Cain, revved the engine. She appeared extremely nervous and displayed erratic behavior, providing inconsistent statements. Cain told the deputy she did not have her driver’s license on her, and a records check confirmed that her license was “suspended—prior.”
After Cain consented to a vehicle search, she attempted to retrieve items despite being instructed not to do so. During the search, assisted by Reserve Deputy Shaun Cabral and Sgt. Whitney Anderson, officers located a clear plastic bag on the passenger side containing a trace amount of crystal methamphetamine. Two clear glass smoking devices, both containing burnt residue that also tested positive for methamphetamine, were found – one in Cain’s purse and another in a sweatshirt. A second plastic baggie with a trace amount of methamphetamine was also discovered in another bag on the passenger side.
When questioned, Cain claimed she had “found” the second smoking device and plastic baggie that was found in her purse with her ID and “didn’t know what to do with it,” contradicting her earlier statement about not having identification.
Cain provided a preliminary breath test, which returned a 0.000 result, indicating no alcohol in her system. She was then arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Security Center without further incident. Her vehicle was towed from the scene.
Cain was given verbal warnings for the traffic offenses.
A Probable Cause Affidavit outlines the initial findings and allegations that led to an arrest. Criminal charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
