STEUBEN CO. – Local farmers came to rescue cattle that were trapped in a trailer after a property damage crash. On Monday, June 30 at 2:40 p.m. the Indiana State Police responded to a property damage crash in the curves on US 20 near County Road 900 West in Steuben County.
The crash investigation reveals that a black 2015 Peterbilt tractor pulling a livestock trailer was headed west on US 20 and was driving too fast as it entered the curves near Lane 102 West Otter Lake Road. The tractor/trailer combination rolled onto its side as it attempted to make the curve.

The driver was not injured, but the crash shut down US20 in that area for several hours as local farmers arrived to help save the trapped cattle. Unfortunately, some cattle did not survive the crash. About 55 cattle survived and were rescued by local farmers who had heard about the crash and began arriving on the scene to assist.
The farmers were able to work with the Troopers to get the cattle out of the trailer. They loaded them up and took them to their farms, where they will care for them until the transportation company arrives and takes them to the feeder lot, where they were originally headed.
The Indiana State Police were assisted at the crash by local farmers, Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County EMA, Orland Fire Department, and Bills Towing.
