Obituary: Richard Austin Ramey

August 19, 1940 – June 24, 2025

Richard Austin Ramey of Bedford, 84, passed away at the IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

He was born in Bedford on August 19, 1940, to Roy Pollard and Ruth (Dye) Pollard. Richard married Marilyn McCain on May 26, 1961, and she survives. Richard was adopted by George T. Ramey, and at the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Army. By the age of 18, he was serving as a military police officer in Germany. One of his many passions was his love of cars. Throughout his early years, he worked on, built, and raced stock cars, drag cars, and, with his two boys, motorcycles and go-karts. He also worked as a mechanic for Land Pontiac and Tom O’Daniel Ford before entering the trucking industry, joining Teamsters Local Union #135, and retiring from Schwerman Trucking out of Lehigh in Mitchell.

Richard is survived by his wife Marilyn Ramey, daughter, Ricki (Gerald) Lawhead, grandchildren, Meagan East, Noel Ramey, Ian (Jee Yoon Park) Lawhead, Josh Lawhead, Ben Lawhead, great grandchildren, Lucas and Alexis Critchlow, daughter-in-law, Darlene Ramey, step-grandson, Ryan Hodge, Brother, David (Joann) Ramey, one sister, Donna Elkins, and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Pollard, Ruth (Dye) Pollard, and George T. Ramey, two loving sons, Kevin Ramey and Drew Ramey, two sisters, Patricia Godsey and Gloria Bailey, and one brother, Tom Ramey.

Cremation was chosen. His memorial stone will be placed at White River Baptist Cemetery.
