Off-duty state trooper locates missing 3-year-old in Washington

WASHINGTON – Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Mitchel Wier, who was off duty and driving his state police vehicle, played a crucial role in the safe recovery of a missing 3-year-old child earlier Tuesday.

Senior Trooper Wier overheard a dispatch from the Washington Police Department regarding the missing child. Several civilians and Washington Police officers had already begun a search effort. Being in the area, Senior Trooper Wier immediately joined the search.

After approximately 15 minutes of searching, Senior Trooper Wier successfully located the missing child. The child was then safely reunited with his mother.

The incident highlights a significant advantage of state troopers having access to their police vehicles while off duty, demonstrating that law enforcement officers, even when not on an active shift, remain vigilant and ready to serve their communities.

An Indiana State Police representative noted, “This is one example that police officers may be OFF DUTY, but we are always working.”
