NASHVILLE – State legislators have confirmed that crucial funds will be made available to repair the tornado damage sustained by the Horseman’s Campground at Brown County State Park. The approval comes after a devastating tornado ripped through the area on May 16th.

State Sen. Eric Koch and State Rep. Dave Hall, both Republicans whose districts encompass Brown County, recently announced that the state budget committee had given its green light to the necessary expenditure. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had sought to transfer just over $925,000 in existing, unused repair and rehabilitation funds specifically for this project.

Both Senator Koch and Representative Hall actively supported the DNR’s request, submitting a joint letter to the budget committee in which they advocated for the fund transfer. Senator Koch emphasized the significant economic importance of the Horseman’s Campground to the park, noting its annual revenue generation of $320,000. He highlighted that the campground’s unique amenities, such as tie-ups and specialized trails, cater specifically to visitors who wish to bring their horses to the park. Representative Hall echoed this sentiment, describing the camp as a “unique part of Brown County.”
The approval of these funds signals a significant step forward in the recovery efforts for Brown County State Park, aiming to restore a beloved and economically vital part of the recreational area.
