Deadline looms for Indiana’s secured school safety grant

INDIANA – Indiana schools seeking to enhance their security measures are reminded that the application deadline for the Fiscal Year 2026 Secured School Safety Grant (FY26 SSSG) is approaching quickly. All applications must be submitted by Monday, June 30, at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Late or incomplete submissions will not be accepted.

The FY26 SSSG, a vital state grant fund, provides matching funds to eligible entities, including school corporations, accredited non-public schools, charter schools, or coalitions thereof. The grant period of performance for FY26 will run from September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2026.

To ensure a successful application, schools must meet several prerequisites:

  • Be registered in IntelliGrants.
  • Possess an active bidder number with the state of Indiana.
  • Have an active supplier number with the state of Indiana.

The grant program supports a wide array of initiatives designed to bolster school safety. Allowable expenses under the FY26 SSSG include:

  • Personnel: Employing a school resource officer (SRO) or law enforcement officer (LEO).
  • Assessments & Mapping: Conducting site vulnerability assessments and/or critical incident digital mapping.
  • Equipment & Technology:
    • Restricting access to school property and classrooms.
    • Assisting with visitor management on school property.
    • Expediting notification of and access for first responders.
    • Providing staff with information on door status.
    • Detecting various threats (fire, chemical, visual, audible).
    • Enhancing in-building emergency communications.
    • Assisting with emergency medical response.
    • Purchasing student management technology.
  • Training:
    • Purchasing or providing training for canines to detect drugs, illegal substances, explosives, or firearms, or for protection.
    • Funding employee training (including per diem, travel, and lodging for eligible training).
    • Funding SRO or LEO training, including expenses related to handling trained canines.
  • Infrastructure: Designing and constructing additions or renovations primarily for physical security enhancement.
  • Programs:
    • Implementing bullying prevention programs.
    • Providing a one-time non-matching grant for initial setup costs of an active event warning system with the county sheriff.
    • Responding to threats in a manner the school deems fit, including firearms training (with a defined curriculum), other self-defense training, or counseling funds in the event of a school shooting.
    • Developing and implementing a Stop the Bleed/bleeding control kit program and/or purchasing kits.
