WASHINGTON D.C. — Thousands of taxpayers who paid their federal taxes by the April 15 deadline are now receiving erroneous notices claiming they still owe money, due to widespread delays within the IRS’s electronic payment system. Compounding the frustration, many impacted individuals report being unable to reach the IRS for assistance.
Taxpayers are struggling to reach the agency by phone. Many described being on hold for two hours or more only to be disconnected, and later being met with an automated message citing “extremely high call volume” and an inability to take their call.
A recent Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report revealed that over 11,000 IRS workers had been fired or resigned by March, raising questions about staffing levels amid these technical difficulties.
The IRS has yet to provide a public statement or clarification regarding the electronic payment system issues. WBIW reached out to the IRS, but received no response.
