WASHINGTON – A juvenile suspect is now in custody following incidents of vandalism and a vehicle crash that occurred in Washington on Wednesday and Thursday, May 28 and 29th.
On Wednesday, May 28, at approximately 11:10 p.m., officers with the Washington Police Department’s 3rd shift responded to a report of a shot window on Vine Street. A description of a suspect vehicle was provided, but officers were unable to locate it or the suspect at that time.
The situation escalated at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, when officers were called back to the same residence after an item was thrown at another window. Responding officers located the suspected vehicle, which had crashed into a tree in Oak Grove Cemetery. No occupants were found in the car, and an extensive search of the area by officers and the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately locate anyone. A WPD Detective was then called in to assist with the investigation.
Authorities continued their search, eventually leading to the suspect being taken into custody. Due to the suspect being a juvenile, no further identifying information will be released.
During the investigation, it was determined that the suspected weapon used in the first incident was an air rifle, which police have since seized. Officials have stated there is currently no suspected ongoing threat to the public.
The Washington Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone with information regarding these incidents, or who may have relevant video footage from security cameras during the specified time frame, is encouraged to contact Sergeant Humphries at brandon.humphries@washingtonin.us or Detective Hudson at barry.hudson@washingtonin.us.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
