One of the highlighted bills was Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 324, which addresses charitable bail organizations and domestic violence cases. This new law will prohibit charitable bail groups from paying bail for individuals accused of violent crimes or those with a history of repeat violent arrests. The legislation targets domestic violence cases explicitly, stipulating that courts must consider ankle monitoring devices as a condition of bail if a person is charged with a domestic violence crime, has a prior unrelated conviction for a violent offense, and has at least one previous conviction for invasion of privacy.

The Governor also ceremonially signed House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1014. This comprehensive bill introduces several key changes. It will make being in the country unlawfully an aggravating factor during sentencing for criminal offenses. Furthermore, HEA 1014 prohibits any government entity from hosting or funding “obscene performances” and grants individuals the right to sue agencies that violate this provision.

In his brief remarks during the signing ceremony, Governor Braun stated, “When communities are safe, families can grow and the economy can thrive.” His comments underscore the administration’s commitment to public safety as a cornerstone of Indiana’s prosperity.

These new laws represent a significant step in the state’s efforts to enhance public safety, deter violent crime, and address issues related to illegal immigration and public obscenity.
