Woman arrested after entering wrong home and allegedly punching disabled female

BEDFORD – Karli M. Wilson, 25, of Bedford, was arrested on Saturday, May 24, after allegedly entering a stranger’s home unannounced and punching a disabled resident in the face.

Wilson is facing charges of battery resulting in bodily injury and residential entry.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Officer Zakry E. Brooking of the Bedford Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of P Street at approximately 1:49 a.m. on Saturday following a report of a stranger refusing to leave a residence. The female caller stated that an intoxicated female, later identified as Karli Wilson, wearing a black belly shirt and jeans, walked into her house unannounced.

The caller reported that Wilson threatened to hit her, and when her disabled daughter told Wilson not to, Wilson struck her on the left side of her face/jaw with a closed fist. The caller stated she did not know Wilson and had never seen her before. Wilson allegedly told them a female named Jasmine sent her there, but the homeowners did not know anyone by that name.

Officer Brooking observed that the disabled female had a red mark and swelling to her left cheek/jaw. The caller described Wilson as approximately 5’2″ tall, skinny, with black hair and a red mark on her cheek.

The caller stated that the lights were off in the living room when Wilson entered her home. When the caller told Wilson to leave, Wilson began arguing. The caller turned on the lights to show Wilson she was in the wrong house and informed her of her address. The caller noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Wilson, and the disabled female told police Wilson was unsteady on her feet and almost fell down. After punching the disabled woman, Wilson left the residence and began walking north on P Street.

Another resident was able to identify Wilson on Facebook and found a photo that matched the female who entered the residence. The outfit Wilson was wearing in a Facebook photo posted the previous day resembled what she was wearing during the incident.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Shelhart of the Bedford Police Department checked the area for Wilson. He spoke with an employee at Shorty’s Bar and Grill who said that a female matching Wilson’s description, Karli Wilson, had been there earlier and left her debit card.

Officers later made contact with Karli Wilson at her last known address, in the 700 block of S Street, through her brother and mother. Wilson was dropped off at the home and was observed wearing a black belly shirt and dark-colored, striped pants similar to the description given. She also had a red mark on her face, consistent with the description.

When initially questioned, Karli Wilson denied that anything had happened and claimed she had walked to the location. After being read her Miranda Rights, she continued to deny the incident. Karli Wilson was taken into custody and transported to the Bedford Police Department.

At the police department, Karli Wilson continued to deny involvement, stating that she had been at Shorty’s with a female friend all night and had never left until she was picked up. Wilson initially said she didn’t know how she got the mark on her cheek, but later told a doctor she probably fell in the bar’s parking lot. A preliminary breath test yielded a result of 0.224. Due to Lawrence County Jail policy, Wilson was taken to IU Health Hospital for medical clearance, where a CT scan of her head came back clear. She was then transported to the Lawrence County Jail for housing.
