Alex Palou claims first Indianapolis 500 victory

SPEEDWAY– Alex Palou has won the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500, marking his first career victory in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. The win came under caution as Nolan Siegel crashed before Palou crossed the Yard of Bricks.

“This is the best,” Palou said. “It’s the best day of my entire life right now. I knew that it was going to be a special day. I didn’t think maybe that much, and it’s just the start of it. I still don’t believe that we’re 500 champions”. He added that the hour and a half since winning had been “the best hour and a half of my entire life”.

After securing the victory, Palou excitedly ran to the Yard of Bricks, flinging his gloves into the air. “It was just a sense of happiness,” he said. “I just wanted to explode and let everybody know how happy I was and celebrate with my team”.

Palou, driving the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, becomes the first Spaniard to win the prestigious race, which dates back to 1911. This victory fills a missing piece in his impressive IndyCar resume, as he has been a dominant force in recent years, winning the IndyCar Series championships in 2021, 2023, and 2024. He had also won 13 races during that period, but surprisingly, none had been on an oval until Sunday.

With this win, Palou will now have his likeness, including his “amazing nose,” etched onto the Borg-Warner Trophy, a tradition for which he will be “forever grateful.”

Palou’s 2025 season has been exceptional, with five wins in the first six IndyCar races. His victory in the Indianapolis 500, following his win in the Sonsio Grand Prix, makes him the first driver since Simon Pagenaud in 2019 to win both races in the same year.

Marcus Ericsson finished in second place, and David Malukas secured third.
