Monroe County tornado recovery update as of May 20th

MONROE CO. – Several Monroe County residents were impacted by a strong storm and tornado that caused widespread damage. The following is some helpful information to help residents and businesses start the recovery process:

Sheltering and Assistance

The American Red Cross will host a shelter and resource center at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, 2700 E. Rogers, until 5:00 p.m. on May 20th. For the shelter, please enter through door 4 of the church.

Starting Wednesday, May 21st, the American Red Cross will be out in the field assisting those impacted at their current location—they will no longer be at the church. If you need assistance from the Red Cross, you can call the hotline at 1-800-733-2767 at any time.

Reporting Storm Damage

Residents are encouraged to report any residential or structural damage by using Indiana 211. Individuals can visit in211.org and click on Damage reporting to submit a report. Those without access to the internet can dial 2-1-1 or 866-211-9966. If you received damage to your house from the May 16 storm, please submit a report.

Debris Cleanup

Property owners with storm-damaged trees and vegetation debris are welcome to take the debris to the Monroe County Debris Management Site at 7740 North Fish Road, Bloomington, IN 47408, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday–Friday. Please only take trees and vegetation debris to this location. County officials are developing a plan for house debris, household appliances, and other debris, as well as a site closer to the impacted area. An update will be provided through another press release once all of the immediate needs of residents have been met.

The Southern Baptist Disaster Relief of Indiana provides this free debris cleanup assistance service.

Storm Relief Supplies Available for Pick Up

A limited supply of tarps and totes is still available for residents impacted by the tornado. Due to the severe weather forecasted for this evening (May 20), the distribution scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church has been cancelled.

If you need tarps or totes after Tuesday, May 20th, you can request them by calling the Emergency Management Office at 812-349-2533. If no one answers, please leave a voicemail.

Donations

Donations of ONLY tarps and totes are being accepted. If interested in donating tarps or totes for storm survivors, you may drop off your donation at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church on the following date and time:

  • Tuesday, May 20 – Noon to 5:00 p.m. will be the last call for donations

Volunteering

Due to the damage and current hazardous conditions, please don’t spontaneously volunteer.
