Storms hit Brown County: Horse fatality, campground and trails closed, damage to therapy center

NASHVILLE– The aftermath of Friday evening’s severe weather in Brown County has brought sad news, where one horse has died and several others sustained injuries at the Horsemen’s Campground within Brown County State Park.

Following the intense storms, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the immediate closure of the Horsemen’s Campground and all horse trails for an “undetermined time.” Holly Lawson, Communications Director for the Indiana DNR, confirmed the closure, while assuring the public that the remainder of the popular state park remains open.

The storms also significantly impacted People & Animal Learning Services (PALS), a local organization that provides therapeutic services involving animals. PALS reported substantial damage to its barn and pastures. Thankfully, it confirmed that its staff and horses are safe.

In response to the damage, PALS has temporarily suspended their client services from Monday, May 19th, to Friday, May 23rd, to allow for a thorough assessment of their property. They are urging the public to refrain from visiting their barn or property until further notice to ensure safety and allow for recovery efforts.

“We are grateful for our supporters who want to help us with the recovery effort. We will provide information as it becomes available about how you can help PALS,” the organization stated on their Facebook page. They are currently seeking assistance from the community in various forms. “If you are willing to help us recover in any way – your time helping repair fences, donations of supplies or equipment or anything else – please contact us through disasterhelp@palstherapy.org. If you wish to contribute financially, we will be posting a link to a special donation form later today, Sat, May 17th.”

The closure of the Horsemen’s Campground and trails will undoubtedly affect many visitors to Brown County State Park, a popular destination for equestrian enthusiasts. The extent of the damage and the timeline for reopening these areas remain uncertain as authorities and park officials continue to evaluate the situation. The community is rallying to support PALS as they begin the process of recovery.
