BLOOMINGTON – A powerful storm system ripped through Western and Southern Monroe County on Friday, May 16, 2025, at approximately 6:25 p.m., leaving a trail of damage and causing injuries. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Bloomington City Police Department, Monroe County Fire Protection District, and the Indiana University Police Department, responded to numerous reports of severe weather impacts across the region.
The storms inflicted significant damage on infrastructure and residences. Authorities reported substantial damage to the Ranchero Motel, located at 4805 S. Old State Road 37, and the Clear Creek Post Office at 4888 S. Rogers St. The Ranchero Motel, which includes 30 units and a private drive containing eight duplex units, sustained considerable impact.

First responders also assisted with heavy storm damage in the areas of West State Road 45, Stanford Road, Ison Road, Elwren Road, and Harmony Road on the west side of Monroe County. These areas experienced numerous downed trees, fallen power lines, and widespread property damage. Initial estimates indicate that at least 75 homes across the county sustained damage due to the severe weather.
Tragically, the storms also resulted in injuries. Authorities confirmed that there were five non-severe storm-related injuries. Additionally, a 96-year-old male sustained a head injury and was transported via ambulance to IU Health Bloomington Hospital. His injury has been reported as non-life-threatening.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deployed additional deputies to assist with the emergency response and provide a reassuring presence in the heavily affected areas. Deputies have been strategically positioned where residents may have been displaced due to the storm damage.
According to Duke Energy, as of 8:01 a.m. this morning, 1,423 people in Monroe County and 96 in Lawrence County are without power.
The American Red Cross has established a temporary shelter at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, located at 2700 E. Rogers Road, for those needing shelter. Individuals seeking refuge are encouraged to bring essential personal items for each family member, including prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows and blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents, and other comfort items.

Authorities are evaluating the condition of affected roadways, and signs are being placed to indicate closures due to storm damage and debris. Residents should exercise caution and heed all road closure signs as cleanup and recovery efforts continue.
