Bartholomew County bridge over Flat Rock River closed indefinitely due to severe rust

BARTHOLOMEW CO. – A Bartholomew County bridge spanning the Flat Rock River has been closed indefinitely due to severe structural concerns. Bartholomew County Highway Engineer Danny Hollander informed county commissioners this morning that Bridge 73, located on County Road 900N between County Roads 200E and 300E, poses a safety risk to travelers.

The closure follows a recent report from bridge inspectors who found extensive rust on the steel-iron truss structure. According to Hollander, the corrosion has reached a point where travel across the bridge is considered dangerous.

Built in 1910, Bridge 73 last underwent a significant renovation over 30 years ago. Hollander stated that an engineering firm is currently assessing the bridge to determine the feasibility of repairs. However, he indicated that the bridge’s construction makes patching very challenging, suggesting that repairs may not be viable.

Adding to the complexity, Hollander noted that the county faces limitations in replacing the bridge due to its historical significance, which state officials have recognized.

Barricades were erected this morning to close Bridge 73 to all traffic. County officials advise motorists to find alternative routes to navigate the closure. The duration of the closure remains uncertain pending the engineering assessment.
