Bedford man faces felony charge after injuring pregnant woman during a dispute

BEDFORD – A Bedford man is facing a felony charge of domestic battery on a pregnant woman following an incident reported to the Bedford Police Department on Monday, April 14. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Clay Blackburn, Carl E. Thomas, 33, is accused of assaulting his pregnant partner.

On April 14th, a woman arrived at the Bedford Police Department to report a domestic disturbance that had occurred earlier that morning at their residence in the 2000 block of G Street. The woman was visibly upset and crying, and provided a recorded interview.

The victim reported that at approximately 3:00 a.m., a physical altercation took place between Thomas and another male. She stated that Thomas believed she was having an affair with the other male, which led to his anger. According to the victim, when she attempted to intervene, Thomas allegedly pushed her down, causing her stomach to strike the floor. The victim at the time was seven months pregnant.

The victim further alleged that Thomas later grabbed her face and applied pressure. At another point, she stated that Thomas grabbed her by the neck and considered choking her, but ultimately did not. She indicated that Thomas had been drinking and was intoxicated during the incident.

After providing her account, the woman signed a battery affidavit and stated her desire to pursue charges against Thomas. She also informed officers that Thomas is currently on parole and that she had already contacted his parole officer regarding the incident. Following a domestic violence lethality screening, protocol was triggered for the victim to speak with a hotline counselor.

Officers recommended that the woman seek medical evaluation, which she stated she would do after leaving the police department.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was detained on Monday, May 12.
